Modern railway applications require solid systems as they not only serve the operators but also the passengers during their travels. The foundation must have the utmost endurance and capacity for everything to work seamlessly.
Capacity here refers to the capability of running error-free railway operations both for the passengers and the operators. This requires sophisticated and reliable software and hardware that supports it.
In terms of endurance, EN50155 is a renowned railway certificate testifying that the components are tested vigorously and confirmed for rolling stock installation and railway deployment.
EN50155 tests include:
- Electromagnetic compatibility, EMI immunity tests
- Vibrational stress, shock, and collision tests
- Wide operational temperature test (minimum operating temperature of -25°C for 2 hours and a maximum of 70°C for 6 hours)
- Wide voltage range compatibility test (endurance of overvoltage and surges)
- Electrical insulation test
- Performance test
- Visual inspection test
The new Kontron KBox R-101 is a control and communication platform in box PC format viable for demanding tasks in railway operations and harsh environments, a perfect solution for both endurance and capacity.
Durability
The most evident proof of its endurance is its EN50155 compatibility. The KBox R-101 has even surpassed the operating temperature test enduring within the range of -40°C-85°C for 10 minutes.
Thanks to the IP54 (ingress protection) standard the box PC has endurance against external factors such as dust, dirt, and water.
Intel Processors
KBox R-101 is based on Intel Atom® X6000E or 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processors and a memory capacity of 32 GB, setting high-quality standards in transportation computers. Additionally, it contains a module for 5G/LTE, GSM, LPWA, and GNSS with the M.2 Key storage drives and expansion slots. These enable joint operation of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth which allows intelligent applications such as onboard Wi-Fi access and predictive railway maintenance to run seamlessly.
Proficient System
The front contains M12x-coded three Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, two isolated serial I/Os, a USB-C interface, and six cut-outs for antenna connections (SMA, QMA). The USB-C interface allows the operator to implement a DisplayPort, USB-3.1-based connection, and a power supply of up to 10W; assisting maintenance and debugging.
On the rear, behind the IP54-protected cover, there are two USB 2.0 ports, a DisplayPort, a CFexpress interface, and two micro-SIM sockets.
The new Kontron KBox R-101 is specially designed to withstand harsh environments and poor connection areas supported by reliable systems and ruggedized structure, making it an excellent choice for railway operations.
